INSTALLATION

Here are some basic guidelines for installing fonts in some of the most common operating systems. If you are using a third-party utility to install and manage your fonts, please refer to the documentation provided with that application.

Important Considerations:

  • Never rename any font files.
  • Never install more than one format of any given font.
  • Macintosh operating systems prior to Mac OS X require Adobe Type Manager (ATM) to make use of Opentype and PostScript Type 1 fonts.

Mac OS X

Mac OS X provides native support for Opentype and PC format TrueType fonts. There may be slight differences in the way either format is rendered depending on the application you are using. Opentype CFF is commonly recommended for print purposes and vector graphics while TrueType may produce better results in raster/bitmap graphics.

1. In the Finder, select the font files you wish to install.
2. Doubleclick the font files. The fonts will open in a preview panel via FontBook, Apple's proprietary font management utility provided with Mac OS X.
3. Click the INSTALL button on the preview panel. Your fonts will be added to your FontBook library and installed in the applicable Fonts folder.

Note: By default, FontBook will MOVE the font files to the applicable Fonts folder. We recommend changing this in FontBook's preferences to COPY the font files to the applicable Fonts folder so you can archive the original files as backups. FontBook offers various additional preference settings that you may customize to suit your working environment. Please refer to the Mac OS X or FontBook documentation for further information.
